Building Structure, Leadership and Growth: How Dexterity System Solutions Increased
Revenue by 34% and Profit by 74%
Dexterity System Solutions Ltd was founded with a clear ambition: to raise the standard of engineering excellence in Zambia.
Founded by directors Gomezyani (Gomez) Mwaba, Chimuka Mudenda, Mwew Musumali and Peleira Zulu the business began as a mechanical and electrical consulting company focused primarily on building services within the construction sector. But from the beginning, the vision extended far beyond simply delivering projects.
The founders saw a gap in the market, not only in technical capability, but in the quality of systems, leadership, and engineering development available locally.
“Looking around at how things were being done, we knew we had the tools and experience to contribute something better,” explains Gomez. “We wanted to contribute to excellence in service delivery in Zambia, while also helping develop Zambian engineers.”
Having spent time working outside Zambia, particularly in South Africa, the team had been exposed to different operational standards, systems, and approaches to engineering consultancy. That exposure shaped their thinking about what was possible back home.
“What we learnt outside Zambia helped us understand what we could do differently and do well — within Zambia.”
At first, the company grew organically through its Building Services Department, steadily establishing itself within the market. But despite the momentum, the founders recognised a growing challenge beneath the surface.
The business had vision and technical capability, but lacked the structure required to scale sustainably.
“The company was growing,” says Gomez, “but not at the right pace because we didn’t yet have the structure to support that growth.”
That turning point led Dexterity to Grow and their business coach.
The introduction came through a recommendation from a friend already involved in the Grow programme. From the first conversations, the directors immediately recognised the value coaching could bring to the business.
What followed became a transformational period for Dexterity.
Beyond Technical Growth
While coaching initially focused on strategic planning and business growth, its impact quickly expanded into leadership development, operational structure, and organisational maturity.
“It’s been both eye-opening and mind-opening,” says Chimuka.
“We’ve had honest discussions that helped channel us towards realistic growth. Even in our planning, we now approach things much more realistically.”
Rather than chasing expansion for its own sake, the coaching process helped the leadership team prioritise sustainable, intentional growth built on stronger systems and clearer strategic thinking.
For Gomez, one of the most significant benefits of the Grow process was the clarity it brought to the business. The coaching journey helped the leadership team define a clear vision for the future and translate that vision into focused goals that could guide decision-making and growth.
One of the biggest mindset shifts was becoming far more deliberate about the type of clients the business wanted to serve.
Rather than trying to pursue every opportunity, the leadership team began focusing on identifying the right clients – those aligned with the company’s long-term growth goals and capable of driving meaningful revenue growth.
“We became much more focused and streamlined in who we wanted as customers,” explains Gomez. “Coaching helped us think more intentionally about building relationships with the clients that were the right fit for where we wanted the business to go.”
The experience also reinforced an important personal lesson for Gomez. The progress achieved through the coaching process re-emphasised that with focused goals, anything is possible.
Coaching also helped bring clarity to the organisational structure required for the company’s next phase of growth. Instead of adding people reactively, the business became clearer on the specific roles, leadership capability, and operational support needed to scale sustainably.
One of the most significant outcomes was the launch and development of Dexterity’s second major division: the Grid and Renewables Department.
Alongside the existing Building Services Department, the new division positioned the company to expand into Zambia’s growing renewable energy and grid infrastructure sector.
Structurally, this marked a major milestone for the business.
“It meant introducing an entirely new department, appointing a departmental lead, and starting to build a team underneath that structure,” explains Gomez.
The expansion not only diversified Dexterity’s service offering but also unlocked significant business growth.
Since June 2024, Dexterity has achieved:
- 34% revenue growth
- 74% profit growth
But the directors are quick to emphasise that the numbers are only part of the story.
Building Leaders, Not Just a Business
One of the most valuable aspects of the coaching process was its ripple effect across the organisation.
Rather than limiting development to the founders themselves, Dexterity extended coaching support to its departmental leaders as well.
“We’ve also had our two departmental leads working with our Grow coach,” says Gomez. “He’s helping us with the heavy lifting of building leaders within the company.”
This became critical as the business expanded and operational complexity increased.
The coaching process helped create greater accountability, stronger planning discipline, and clearer leadership structures throughout the business. It also shifted how the directors approached decision-making and long-term growth.
Instead of reacting to opportunities as they emerged, the business began operating with greater strategic intention.
The result was not only improved operational efficiency and profitability, but also a leadership team better equipped to guide the business into its next phase of growth.
A Business Positioned for the Future
Today, Dexterity System Solutions Ltd is no longer solely a construction-focused consultancy.
With two established departments, expanding leadership capability, and growing expertise in renewable energy and grid systems, the company is positioning itself as a forward-looking engineering consultancy prepared for Zambia’s evolving infrastructure landscape.
For the founders, however, the journey remains about more than commercial success.
At its core, the vision is still rooted in contribution — contributing to engineering excellence, developing local talent, and building a business capable of long-term impact.
And with stronger systems, clearer strategy, and a growing leadership team in place, Dexterity is now positioned to scale with far greater confidence and clarity.
When asked what he would say to another business owner considering business coaching, Gomez’s response is simple: “Go for it, you will not regret it.”
